The theoretical hold is the expected percentage of total wagers (coin-in) that a slot machine will retain as profit over the long term, calculated directly from the game’s mathematical design (the PAR sheet). For example, a machine with a 92% RTP has a theoretical hold of 8%. The theoretical hold is a fixed property of the game that does not change based on short-term results — it represents the expected outcome over millions of spins. Casino management uses theoretical hold to project revenue, set game mix on the slot floor, and evaluate game performance. Gaming regulators establish maximum hold percentages (or minimum RTP) that operators must adhere to, which vary by jurisdiction.

In practice

Theoretical hold is sometimes called “theo” in casino industry parlance. Formula: Theoretical Hold = 100% - RTP. Nevada requires a minimum theoretical RTP of 75% for most slots; many jurisdictions require 85% or higher. The difference between theoretical hold and actual hold over a reporting period is a key performance metric.
