Base Dealer (2nd Base / 3rd Base)

Craps

One of the two dealers positioned at opposite ends of the craps table, flanking the boxman. The dealer to the boxman’s right is the “2nd base dealer,” and the dealer to the boxman’s left is the “3rd base dealer.” A simple mnemonic: on the 2nd base side, the number 2 on the field bet is furthest from the boxman; on the 3rd base side, the number 12 (1+2=3) on the field is furthest from the boxman. Base dealers are responsible for managing bets on their respective sides of the table, paying winning bets, collecting losing bets, and assisting players with bet placement and questions.

In practice

Player positions are designated by which base dealer services them: “2nd base side” or “3rd base side.” Supervisors use player clothing colors and positions to track players for rating purposes.
