17. Chip Inventory

Chips

Chip inventory is the complete accounting of all gaming chips owned by a casino, encompassing chips in the main vault, chips in table game chip trays (the chip float), chips in transit during fills and credits, and chips held in reserve sets. The total chip inventory must always equal the cash reserve held in the casino’s vault — each chip in circulation is backed by an equivalent cash amount. Casinos conduct comprehensive chip inventories at regular intervals: typically at least once per shift for the active gaming floor, daily at pit open and close, and a full property-wide inventory at least annually. Discrepancies between physical chip counts and accounting records are investigated immediately and may indicate theft, counterfeiting, or procedural errors.

In practice

The annual chip inventory is comparable to a retail store’s year-end inventory. Many jurisdictions require annual chip inventories to be witnessed by gaming regulators.
