48. Baccarat Probabilities and Commission

Table Game Math

In baccarat, three betting options exist with mathematically distinct expected values. The Banker bet wins approximately 45.86% of resolved hands (excluding ties), the Player bet wins 44.62%, and ties occur 9.52% of the time. Because the Banker bet wins slightly more often, casinos charge a 5% commission on winning Banker bets, resulting in a house edge of 1.06% — still the best bet at the table. The Player bet carries a 1.24% house edge with no commission. The Tie bet, typically paying 8:1, has a massive house edge of 14.36% (or 4.84% if the casino offers 9:1). In some Asian markets, “no commission” baccarat variants alter the payout structure (paying 1:2 on Banker wins with a total of 6) to achieve similar mathematical results without the commission collection process. Macau VIP rooms predominantly feature baccarat because it aligns with Asian gambling preferences and offers the casino a reliable mathematical edge.

In practice

The Banker bet’s advantage comes from the drawing rules — the Banker acts second and draws based on the Player’s third card. In no-commission baccarat, the house edge on Banker shifts slightly depending on the exact rule variation. Side bets like Dragon Bonus, Panda 8, and Perfect Pairs carry significantly higher house edges (2.65% to over 30%).
