Slang — Player Classification

A “shark” (also “card shark”) is a highly skilled gambler who consistently wins through superior knowledge, strategy, or technique. Sharks are distinguished from professional gamblers in that they may also engage in predatory behavior — exploiting weaker players (fish), identifying and taking advantage of dealer errors, or employing advantage play techniques. Casinos view sharks with mixed feelings: their skill can reduce house advantage, but their presence can attract other players and create exciting table atmosphere.

In practice

The term “shark” comes from the predatory nature of the animal, contrasted with the helpless “fish.” In surveillance terminology, sharks are often flagged for close monitoring to ensure they are not employing prohibited techniques.
