Slang — Player Classification

A “grinder” is a gambler who makes small, consistent profits through disciplined play, tight bankroll management, and accumulation of modest wins over time. Grinders are the opposite of whales — they rarely take big risks, never chase losses aggressively, and maintain a steady, methodical approach to gambling. In poker, grinders are known for playing many hours at low-to-mid stakes, eking out small hourly win rates. Casinos generally view grinders as low-value customers who consume table space without generating significant revenue.

In practice

While grinders are not profitable for casinos on a per-visit basis, they contribute to game liquidity (especially in poker) and help fill tables during off-peak hours.
