A “whale” is a casino industry term for an ultra-high-net-worth gambler who wagers exceptionally large sums of money — typically hundreds of thousands to millions of dollars per hand or per visit. Whales are the most valuable customers in the casino ecosystem and receive extraordinary comps including private jets, luxury suites, dedicated hosts, and virtually unlimited credit. In Macau, whales are predominantly mainland Chinese business owners and real estate developers who play baccarat in VIP rooms. Casinos typically have fewer than 100 active whale accounts globally.

The term “whale” derives from the gambling world’s maritime metaphor — just as a whale is the largest creature in the ocean, a casino whale is the largest class of gambler. Macau’s whale population was severely impacted by China’s anti-corruption campaign and COVID-19 travel restrictions.
