Bad Beat

Poker

A situation where a strong hand loses to an even stronger hand or to a statistically unlikely draw. Many casinos offer “Bad Beat Jackpot” promotions that pay large prizes when a very strong hand (e.g., four of a kind or better) loses to an even stronger hand. Bad beat jackpots are funded by a small additional rake from each pot.

In practice

Bad Beat Jackpot rules specify minimum hand requirements (e.g., quad 8s or better beaten). The jackpot is typically split among the losing hand, winning hand, and remaining players at the table. Surveillance must verify qualifying hands before any jackpot payout.
