National Indian Gaming Commission (NIGC)

The independent federal regulatory agency responsible for overseeing gaming conducted on Indian lands in the United States under the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act (IGRA). The NIGC establishes Minimum Internal Control Standards (MICS) that tribal gaming operations must follow, conducts audits and compliance reviews, approves tribal gaming ordinances, and has enforcement authority including the power to assess civil penalties and close gaming facilities. The NIGC also provides training and technical assistance to tribal regulators and gaming operations.
