Card Counting (Team Play)
How it works
A legal advantage play where players track the ratio of high to low cards remaining in a blackjack shoe to identify favorable betting situations. Team play amplifies the edge through coordinated spotters and big players. Spotters play minimum bets at multiple tables, keeping the running count. When the count becomes favorable (positive), they signal a “big player” who joins the table and places large bets until the count drops. The team splits profits among members and investors.
On the record
The MIT Blackjack Team operated from 1979 through the early 2000s, growing to nearly 80 players across multiple states. They used the Big Player technique and won millions before casino countermeasures and yearbook identification made continued play impossible. The story inspired the book “Bringing Down the House” and film “21.”
