Part II: Table Game Cheating · Fan-Tan

Fan-Tan Counter Switch

Asian Table GamesREPORTEDSkill: Intermediate

How it works

Fan-tan pays the number of counters left after the pile has been counted off in fours. The result is that last small group: one, two, three, or four. The cheat changes the counters under the cover, so the count is not the count the bets were made on. This is not sic bo, and it is not a dice switch.

Where it appears

Fan-tan, in a casino or in a private game

On the record

In Hong Kong, HCMA 402/1996, the court upheld convictions for cheating at fan-tan. The evidence included a chance to interfere with the counters under the bamboo cover while a participant turned away. The case was a private game, not a casino pit.
