1.25 Mass Market Gaming
Macau — Gaming Segments
Mass market gaming refers to casino play by individual patrons who use their own cash and do not participate in VIP or junket programs. In Macau, the mass market segment became increasingly important following the Chinese government’s anti-corruption campaign (2013-2015) and the collapse of the junket industry. Mass market players wager smaller amounts per hand than VIP players but generate higher margins for operators because no junket commissions are paid. Following the COVID-19 pandemic and junket prosecutions, mass market and premium mass segments became the dominant revenue sources for Macau operators.
In practice
Macau’s revenue mix shifted dramatically from approximately 70% VIP/30% mass in 2013 to roughly 30% VIP/70% mass by 2024, representing a fundamental restructuring of the business model.
