30. Counter Check
Credit & Markers
A counter check is a negotiable instrument issued by the casino and signed by the player at the gaming table, functioning as a check drawn against the player’s bank account to obtain chips or cash against an established credit line. Counter checks must include the patron’s name and signature, the dollar amount, the patron’s bank name with routing and account numbers, the date of issuance, and the signature of the casino employee approving the transaction. When a player requests a marker, the casino effectively writes a check against the player’s account (hence “counter check”), which the player signs to authorize. If the marker is not repaid within the specified period, the casino deposits the counter check with the player’s bank for collection.
In practice
Counter check issuance has become less common as direct marker processing through casino management systems has replaced manual check writing. PAGCOR and many U.S. jurisdictions have specific regulatory requirements for counter check documentation.
