37. Collection

Credit & Markers

Collection refers to the process by which a casino pursues repayment of outstanding markers, credit lines, or other gambling debts from patrons. The collections process typically begins with internal collection efforts by the casino’s credit department, including phone calls and written demands. If internal efforts are unsuccessful, the casino may escalate to external collection agencies, legal action, or in Nevada, criminal prosecution through the District Attorney’s Bad Check Unit. Collection procedures must comply with applicable debt collection laws, including the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA). Successful collection efforts are critical to maintaining the viability of casino credit programs and discouraging irresponsible borrowing.

In practice

Casino collection rates are closely monitored metrics. High collection failure rates may indicate problems with credit approval standards or may reflect broader economic conditions affecting high-end players.
