60. Hard Count

Count Processes

The hard count is the process of counting and processing bulk coins, tokens, and gaming chips that require physical handling and mechanical processing — as opposed to the “soft” paper items counted in the soft count. In modern TITO-era casinos, hard counts are significantly less common than in the past, but they still occur for coin-operated machines, legacy token-based operations, and for periodic chip inventory counts. The hard count typically uses coin-counting machines to sort and count large volumes of coins or tokens by denomination. Gaming chips counted during hard counts are typically inventoried as part of the periodic chip inventory process rather than daily revenue counting.

In practice

In coin-heavy operations, hard counts were performed daily. With TITO technology eliminating coin handling, hard counts are now primarily associated with chip inventory procedures and legacy machine maintenance.
