Segregation of Duties
Compliance
A fundamental internal control principle requiring that key functions and responsibilities be divided among different individuals to prevent fraud, errors, and unauthorized activities. In casino cage operations, for example, the person who accepts cash should not be the same person who records the transaction in the accounting system or the person who reconciles the bank account. Proper segregation of duties ensures that no single individual has control over all aspects of a transaction, reducing the opportunity for theft, manipulation, or money laundering.
