Chip Dumping

Poker & Card Room ScamsREPORTEDSkill: High

How it works

(1) The practice of intentionally losing chips to another player (a confederate or alternate account) to transfer funds, manipulate tournament standings, or launder money. Common in both live and online poker. In live play, a player makes deliberately poor decisions to lose a large pot to a confederate. Online, a fraudster uses multiple accounts, one intentionally losing to another controlled account, which then cashes out “winnings.” This is used for money laundering, bonus abuse, and tournament manipulation. (2) A player intentionally loses chips to a confederate at the table, usually by making obviously poor plays that transfer value. In tournaments, a large stack may deliberately lose chips to keep a short-stacked partner alive, ensuring both players cash. In cash games, chip dumping facilitates money laundering or settles debts outside the game. Methods include making huge calls with no hand and folding on the river, or building large pots and then folding to small bets.

On the record

(1) In 2025, the WSOP investigated chip dumping allegations at the final table of Event #53 where the runner-up was accused of intentionally losing heads-up to secure a $1 million bonus for the winner from ClubWPT Gold. The 2012 WSOP Circuit event in Tunica saw multiple players disqualified for systematic chip transfers between known associates. (2) FINTRAC Canada has documented chip dumping used with stolen credit cards: funds deposited via stolen cards are transferred to another account through intentional losses, then cashed out. Online poker bot farms automate this at scale.
