Multi-Accounting / Account Takeover (Online)
How it works
A single player operating multiple accounts simultaneously at the same table, or stealing legitimate player accounts to play with established histories and bankrolls. Fraudsters use VPNs, virtual machines, and stolen identities to create multiple accounts. They sit at the same table and use their multiple positions to see more cards, control betting, or dump chips. Account takeovers involve phishing, credential stuffing, or malware to access legitimate accounts.
On the record
A massive bot ring on PokerStars resulted in substantial financial gains before being dismantled. Online platforms regularly identify and ban multi-accounting rings, but the practice persists.
