Chip (Gaming Chip)

ChipsREPORTED

(1) A casino chip is a round, flat token used as currency within a specific casino’s gaming areas, representing a specific monetary denomination. Each casino maintains its own unique chip design with distinctive colors, edge spots, inlays, and security features to prevent counterfeiting and ensure that chips can only be redeemed at the issuing property. Chips serve as the primary medium of exchange at table games, allowing for faster play while reducing cash handling risks on the gaming floor. Every chip in circulation is backed by an equivalent amount of cash held in the casino’s vault, making the chip inventory a direct liability on the casino’s balance sheet. (2) A non-metal or partly metal representative of value, redeemable for cash, issued by a casino for use at table games.

In practice

In Nevada, chips are considered negotiable instruments; casinos outside Nevada generally are not permitted to honor another casino’s chips. Universal; also called cheques, tokens, or checks.
