Rolling Chip (Dead Chip)

ChipsREPORTED

(1) A rolling chip is a specific type of non-negotiable chip used in Macau and Asian VIP gaming rooms that tracks a player’s rolling chip turnover: the total amount wagered using these chips over time. The term “rolling” refers to the cycle of play: a player buys in for rolling chips, wagers them, and if they accumulate sufficient cash chips from winning bets, they can exchange those cash chips back for more rolling chips to continue playing. The ratio of rolling chip turnover to actual cash buy-in is a critical metric for junket operators and casinos to measure player activity and calculate commissions. Rolling chip programs typically require minimum buy-ins starting at HK$50,000. (2) A system used primarily in VIP baccarat in Asian casinos (particularly Macau) whereby players purchase special non-negotiable chips that can only be used for wagering and cannot be cashed out directly. Rolling chips are designed to track player turnover (total amount wagered) for commission calculation purposes. The player purchases rolling chips with cash or via a marker, plays with them at the table, and any winnings are paid in regular (cashable) chips. The total rolling chip volume determines the commission payable to the gaming promoter and the rebate offered to the player. Rolling chip commission is the primary revenue mechanism for junket operators in Macau. (3) Rolling chips (also called “dead chips”) are non-cashable promotional chips used in Macau’s VIP gaming programs. When a player buys into a rolling chip program, they receive promotional chips that can only be used for wagering, not exchanged for cash. If the player wins a bet, they are paid in normal cashable chips; if they lose, the dead chip is collected by the house. This system allows casinos and junkets to track wagering volume precisely and calculate commissions and rebates. Rolling chip turnover (as opposed to actual cash drop) became the standard metric for measuring VIP business volume in Macau. (4) A non-negotiable (dead) chip that is tracked through multiple wagering cycles in a VIP rolling chip program. When a player purchases rolling chips, the chips are “rolled” through play: the player wagers them, wins are paid in cashable chips, and the player may exchange accumulated cashable chips for additional rolling chips. Each “roll” or turnover cycle is tracked, and commissions or rebates are calculated based on total rolling chip volume. The “rolling chip turnover” is the total amount wagered through the rolling chip program and serves as the basis for junket commissions and player rebates.

In practice

Rolling chip programs are the dominant mechanism for VIP play in Macau. The term “rolling” refers to the repeated cycling of chips through wagering: each time cashable winnings are exchanged back into non-negotiable chips, the chip “rolls” again. Rolling chip volume is a key metric reported by Macau casino operators to analysts. It differs from “drop” in that it measures total wagering activity, not just cash deposited. The rolling chip/dead chip system was central to the junket business model, enabling junkets to earn commissions based on turnover rather than player losses. The 2022 gaming law fixed the commission rate at 1.25% of rolling chip turnover for gaming promoters.
