1.14 Melco Resorts & Entertainment
Macau — Corporate
Melco Resorts & Entertainment is one of Macau’s six gaming concessionaires, founded by Lawrence Ho (son of Stanley Ho) as a joint venture with Australian media company Publishing and Broadcasting Limited (PBL) and later with Crown Resorts. Melco operates City of Dreams, Studio City, and Altira Macau. The company entered Macau through a sub-concession from Wynn Resorts in 2006 and secured a new 10-year concession in 2022. Melco has expanded beyond Macau with operations in the Philippines (City of Dreams Manila) and Cyprus.
In practice
Lawrence Ho’s successful establishment of Melco as an independent entity separate from his father’s SJM Holdings demonstrated that the post-liberalization Macau market could support new, non-family operators.
