20. Vault

Cash Handling

The vault is the most secure storage area within a casino, typically located behind the cage or in a separate restricted-access area, where the casino’s primary cash reserves, excess chip inventory, reserve chip sets, valuable documents, and patron safekeeping deposits are stored. Vault access is strictly controlled through dual-key or dual-combination systems, biometric access controls, and comprehensive logging of all entries and exits. Only designated senior cage personnel and security officers have vault access. All funds moved between the vault and the cage main bank require detailed documentation with dual signatures. The vault cash reserve backs the entire chip inventory and must always equal or exceed the total value of chips in circulation plus any patron deposits held.

In practice

Vault designs vary but typically include reinforced walls, time-delay locks, redundant alarm systems, and dedicated surveillance coverage. Most jurisdictions require vault access logs to be maintained for at least five years.
