25. Float

Cash Handling

In casino operations, “float” refers to the cash or chip working inventory assigned to a specific operational unit for conducting transactions during a shift. The float at a cashier’s window enables the cashier to make change, redeem chips, and process payouts. The chip float on the gaming floor represents the total chips distributed to all active tables. The slot float refers to cash available in slot machines for payouts. Floats are established at specific amounts and must be reconciled at shift change. Float management is critical — insufficient float causes service delays and player dissatisfaction, while excessive float increases theft risk and reduces operational efficiency.

In practice

The term “float” is used broadly across casino departments. Chip float specifically refers to chips at gaming tables; cash float refers to currency at cashier stations.
