Hard Count
Cage / Vault
The process of counting and recording coin or token drops from slot machines and other gaming devices. While less common today due to the widespread adoption of ticket-in/ticket-out (TITO) systems, the hard count was historically a major casino operation involving the physical weighing and counting of thousands of pounds of coin. Hard count procedures require the same security controls as soft count, including minimum team size, surveillance coverage, and independent verification.
In practice
In jurisdictions where coin-operated machines still exist (or for specialty machines), hard count procedures remain relevant. The hard count is typically performed less frequently than the soft count due to the volume of coin involved.
