A behavioral condition characterized by persistent and recurrent gambling behavior that causes significant disruption to an individual’s personal, professional, or financial life. Problem gambling (also called compulsive gambling or pathological gambling) involves symptoms such as preoccupation with gambling, need to gamble with increasing amounts, repeated unsuccessful efforts to control or stop gambling, restlessness or irritability when attempting to stop, gambling to escape problems, chasing losses, lying about gambling activity, and reliance on others for financial bailouts. Casino staff are trained to recognize indicators of problem gambling and to respond appropriately.
