Raise

Poker

To increase the current bet amount, requiring all subsequent players to match the new higher amount to stay in the hand. Raising is an aggressive action used to build the pot or force opponents to fold. In limit games, raises must be in fixed increments; in no-limit games, a player may raise by any amount up to their entire stack.

In practice

A re-raise (or “three-bet”) is a raise of a previous raise. String raises (raising in multiple motions without a verbal declaration) are prohibited in most jurisdictions. Surveillance should monitor for string raises and other betting irregularities.
