Counterfeit Currency / Chip Acceptance

Insider / Employee ScamsREPORTEDSkill: High

How it works

Cashiers or dealers knowingly accepting counterfeit money or fraudulent chips in exchange for genuine value, either as accomplices or due to inadequate verification. An insider accepts fake bills or counterfeit chips from an accomplice, exchanging them for real chips or cash. The accomplice later cashes out legitimate value while the insider covers the discrepancy or splits the proceeds.

On the record

A man at a Sydney casino presented counterfeit chips for a color change; alert cashiers noticed weight and feel irregularities. The fraudster fled, abandoning the fakes. In another case, nearly perfect counterfeit $100 poker chips were passed before staff grew suspicious.
