A currency counter is an electronic machine used in the cage, count room, and other casino cash handling areas to rapidly count, authenticate, and sort large volumes of paper currency by denomination. Modern currency counters include counterfeit detection features using magnetic ink (MG), ultraviolet (UV), infrared (IR), and dimensional sensors to identify fraudulent bills. Casino-grade counters are typically high-speed machines capable of processing 1,000+ bills per minute and interfacing with casino accounting systems to automatically record count totals. Count rooms use currency counters during the soft count process to process drop box contents, while cage cashiers use smaller units for customer transactions.

In practice

Currency counters must be tested daily in the count room with test counts before processing actual drop contents. Independent testing of counter accuracy is required quarterly in most jurisdictions.
