27. Bill Validator (Bill Acceptor)
Cash Handling
A bill validator is an electronic device installed in slot machines and other gaming devices that accepts, authenticates, and records paper currency inserted by players. The validator scans each bill using optical, magnetic, and ultraviolet sensors to verify authenticity, reads the denomination, and credits the corresponding amount to the machine’s electronic meter. Validated bills are stored in a locked cash box within the machine for later collection. Bill validators can be configured to accept specific denominations and currencies, and they maintain internal transaction logs. Modern validators communicate with the casino management system and slot monitoring system to provide real-time data on machine activity.
In practice
Most jurisdictions require bill validators to meet specific technical standards and be approved by gaming regulators. Validator firmware must be securely locked to prevent tampering.
