Croupier

Dealers

The European and Asia-Pacific term for a casino dealer. The word derives from French, originally referring to the rider of the croup (rump) of a horse behind the saddle – later adapted to describe the person who collects and distributes money at gaming tables. Croupiers perform the same functions as dealers but the term is the standard designation in European, Australian, Singaporean, and Macau casinos. In some jurisdictions, “croupier” specifically refers to dealers who work roulette and other wheel games, while “dealer” refers to card game operators.

In practice

In the UK, Australia, and New Zealand, all gaming floor staff are called croupiers. Crown Casino in Melbourne and Star Casino in Sydney use “croupier” universally. In Macau, the term is commonly used alongside Chinese titles.
