Bustout / Deadbeat Marker Fraud
How it works
A player establishes credit with a casino, draws significant markers (interest-free loans secured by bank accounts), gambles, and then intentionally defaults, sometimes with no intention of ever repaying. The player builds credit history by initially repaying smaller markers promptly. Once credit limits increase, they draw large markers, lose or transfer the funds, and refuse payment. In organized schemes, players coordinate to exhaust credit simultaneously across multiple casinos.
On the record
In 2018 a defendant was sentenced to two years in prison for a $1.1 million casino marker and credit card fraud scheme, using false identities of migrant workers to obtain markers at multiple casinos, initially repaying to build creditworthiness before defaulting.
