Variance
Foundational ProbabilityREPORTED
(1) A variance is any discrepancy between the expected and actual amounts counted during the count process, or between the count total and the amount recorded on accounting reports. Variances can occur due to counting errors, dropped or miscounted items, recording errors, theft, or machine malfunctions. When a variance is identified, the count team must take immediate corrective action: recounting the affected items, checking counting machine accuracy, and investigating potential sources of the discrepancy. Unresolved variances must be documented on a Drop Variance Report that includes the date, source (if known), measures taken to identify the source, and the amount of the adjustment. Significant or recurring variances trigger additional investigation by accounting and possibly surveillance. (2) Variance measures the statistical dispersion of outcomes around the expected value, quantifying how far actual results deviate from the theoretical average. In casino games, high variance means results fluctuate wildly: players may experience long losing streaks punctuated by large wins. Slot machines typically have higher variance than table games because they feature rare but large jackpot payouts among many small losses. Casino operators must understand variance because it affects cash flow, player psychology, and the time required for games to converge to their theoretical house edge. Surveillance analysts use variance calculations to determine whether observed results are within normal statistical ranges. (3) / Volatility The degree of fluctuation in short-term results around the expected value.
In practice
Formula for variance of a bet: Var = (P(win) x (Win Amount - EV) + P(lose) x (Loss Amount - EV)). Variance increases with the square of bet size. High-variance games require larger bankrolls for both players and casinos. Most jurisdictions require Drop Variance Reports to be filed with the gaming regulator. If the source of a variance cannot be identified, adjustments are typically applied to a predetermined default table or slot machine as specified in internal controls. High variance games (slots, craps prop bets) have wild swings.
